I’m not sure if any of you have noticed but apparently there is a football tournament about to start.
Only joking, the event we’ve all been waiting for is finally here. Ok so England don’t play for another day but we can get stuck into the Group A matches with vigour.
The old cliche of you can’t win without scoring is dragged out of the locker and quite frankly I couldn’t agree more.
The top goalscorer market is bit of a lottery at this stage in the tournament but worth a speculative punt.
To have the most chance you need to have a player from a team that reaches at least the last four unless someone score six against Angola.
So that probably leaves Brazil, Argentina, England, Italy, Spain or France
Ronaldo is a doubt for the first game and is not as good as four years ago. His partner up front Adriano should be there or thereabouts and @14 is a decent shot.
Argentina have a decent side and do rely on Crespo for the goals. If they get the ball in the right area then he will fill his boots. Odds of 26 sound very good but I’m not sure Argentina will make the final stages of the tournament.
England look solid but I don’t think they will be scoring goals for fun. I can’t see Owen or Crouch getting shed loads and it looks like Rooney will not play many of the games. My speculative choice is Lampard @75. It’s a long shot but he is furthest forward of the midfielders and takes the penalties. If England make the Semi’s or final he could be the man.
Italy have Mr Toni but I’m not sure about him, again I don’t think the Italians will be scoring a lot, just grinding results.
Spain have disappointed in recent competitions but have a decent player in Torres who is coming back into form after an ordinary domestic season. His odds are 30 and could be worth a small wager.
France are a difficult one to call and many fancy Henry or Zidane to score shedloads. I don’t agree. Its an ageing squad, Henry’s record at international level is ok but not up there with the best and Zidane is not quite as prolific as before. For this reason I have already tipped Henry’s pal Trezeguet to score a few in the top three market.
