Quarter Final - How can it be.......? - By Mappy

...that Germany is the favourite to qualify for the QF ahead of Argentina? This is home-town advantage gone mad. Maybe I will be forced to eat my words, but I just can’t see anything else than Argentina progressing at the expense of the home nation. People are going mad because Germany has beaten 4 very poor teams thus far in WC2006.

Let’s look who they’ve played.

• Costa Rica – caused Germany problems at the back.  Jesus - if Wanchope caused them problems what are Crespo, Saviola, Riquelme and Gonzalez going to do to them, to say nothing of Tevez and Messi.  Costa Rica have won 1 from 7 games in 2006. 
• Poland – an injury time winner.  Yes - every game is 90 mins, so it doesn’t matter when you score, but this was against a team that lost to Lithuania earlier this year. 
• Ecuador – left out 6 of the regular 11 for this game, so although what seems a good 3 – 0 win should maybe be taken with a pinch of salt. 
• Sweden – have not won a game in 2006 – had a player harshly sent off - and still should have come back to 2-1 with only 10 men.  That being said Germany did play well in this game and was the best they have played in the tournament so far.

On the other hand Argentina’s four opponents so far in WC2006 couldn’t be more different.  They skated through the “group of death” during which they beat Ivory Coast (arguably the best team not to get out of the group stage), annihilated Serbia & Montenegro and played out a comfortable draw with Holland.  The doubters out there will point to Mexico taking Argentina into extra-time in the 2nd round.  But, this is not a normal "out of Mexico" Mexico team.  They played fantastically well and even then only took Argentina to extra-time because the latter had a perfectly good goal ruled out for an apparent off-side.  

The only big footballing nation (sorry Sweden) Germany has played in 2006 is Italy and that ended in a 4 – 1 drumming of the Germans. 

Had this match have taken place after each team had played two games in this tournament the prices would have been around 3 for Germany and 1.59 for Argentina.  So, at above evens this is a stand-out price.  The price of Germany has crashed purely on performances against weak opposition and I urge you to take advantage.
