Beginners Guide to Betting
The Beginners Guide to Gambling and using this site
This page is going to take you through the simple steps to getting started in the wonderful world of gambling and describe how each of the bets on this site work and how you use BetFair.
The best advice I can give on using betfair is to go through the online tutorial......it's a kop out on my part I know but who better to describe the inner workings of the product then themselves and they have much better graphics then I do so to start with go through the online tutorial and then come back here afterwards and I'll explain how our site uses the markets you have just seen.
Go to www.betfair.com and on the home page you will see an option on the right hand side which has DEMO NOW or "view our site demo". Click this link and it will explain the basics of
- How to Back a Winner
- How to Lay a Loser
- Range and Spread Betting
I'll be waiting here for you after you finish the demo........ready? Good wasn't it? By now you should understand what the difference between Backing and Laying is and also what the decimal odds are (they are much easier to understand then regular 11/8 100/30 aren't they?).
We are now to describe how each of the bets we tip up here work.
Backing
This is where one of our team fancies a team/person is going to win their particular event. We will list the stake (1pt, 0.5pts 3pts etc..) the name of the team/person we wish to back, the event in which they are playing and finally the odds of it happening. e.g.
- Back 1pt Arsenal - Arsenal v Liverpool @ 2.52
This tells us that we are betting 1pt of our bank on Arsenal to beat Liverpool and we are getting odds of 2.52. This means 1 of 3 outcomes
- Arsenal 1-0 Liverpool = WIN 1.52pts
- Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool = LOSE 1pt
- Arsenal 1-2 Liverpool = LOSE 1pt
Laying
This is where we are backing against a team/person for them to win their event, you are therefore cheering on the opposition which can be a lot of fun but also quite frustrating!!
- Lay 2pts Chelsea - Chelsea v Newcastle @ 1.77
This tells us that we are laying 0.77pts of our bank on Chelsea NOT beating Newcastle. The reason it is 0.77pts is because we have to work out how much we would lose if our bet didn't win (i.e. Chelsea won) which is listed below in the outcomes
- Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle = LOSE 1.44pts
- Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle = WIN 2pts
- Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle = WIN 2pts
Spread Bets
These are the most high risk bets going.........they can also be the most fun!! The normal markets that you will see on CalvStar are football markets for both corners and bookings and here is how they work
- Buy 1pt Total Corners - Arsenal v Liverpool @ 10.3
This tells us that we are expecting there to be more then 10 corners in the match......lets see some examples of the result and what we stood to win/lose
- Total Corners = 8 - LOSE 2.3pts
- Total Corners = 10 - LOSE 0.3pts
- Total Corners = 13 - WIN 2.7pts
As you can when the total corners in the result are lower then what we BOUGHT at then we lose 1pt for each corner less then the total.......however for every corner over 10 we gain 1 point.......get it? Ok then here is another example this time with Bookings
- Buy 0.1pts Bookings - Arsenal v Liverpool @ 38
Now Bookings work in this way, a yellow card = 10 and a red card = 25.......lets see what happens with the following examples
- Bookings = 3 Yellow Cards + 0 Red Cards = LOSE 0.8pts
- Bookings = 4 Yellow Cards + 0 Red Cards = WIN 0.2pts
- Bookings = 4 Yellow Cards + 1 Red Cards = WIN 2.7pts
To be honest this is a very high risk gamble which is why we only usualy BUY or SELL the range for 0.1pts because of the scenario's above......however if you can pick a very volitile game where a lot of cards are shown........you could clean up.
